Where the peace and serenity of our picturesque 19th century village disappeared? Our small National Trust town, set amoung the hills of North East Victoria, Australia, is everything you can imagine about an early pioneering village - this is where it all stops and our story begins.

Classified by The National Trust the Stone Bridge was built in 1859-60 to allow easy crossing of the Commissioners Creek, on what was then the main Melbourne to Sydney route.

Yackandandah is one of Australias prettiest villages. Nestled in the foothills of Stanley State Forest we're surrounded by lush, green vegetation and magnificent wildlife. We're rich in heritage history and we're rich in natural resources, granite, clay, gold and sparkling spring water.

It's of little wonder the close knit community of Yackandandah is here to stay; it's as strong today as it was in our early pioneering days.

The old diggers certainly found gold when they decided to build the town in this secluded and protected valley.

Today Yackandandah is a thriving community, built upon the solid values and vision of our pioneers and miners. Yackandandah people are remarkable; their story has endured over the years because of the spirit of the town. It's home to many talented artists, from around the world and is brimming with arts, crafts and antiques that will delight and suprise you..

Yackandandah has earned an impressive reputation for its spectacular, not to be missed annual events.

Over thirty community groups exist here; from fishing to arts, a population of over 900!

Yackandandah is located just 20 minutes south of the border towns Albury & Wodonga, from the Freeway turn to Tallangatta, follow on the C531 to Baranduda, a right turn to Yackandandah C527, after you have quench your thirst at your favorite spot, and wandered along the main street, adventure on the "Tourist Drive No 6" this is an interesting journey, self drive, you will find twelve story boards, placed along in key locations giving you glimpses of yesteryears. also includes "The Goldern Heritage Drive" find the vic roads sign that directs you to  Myrtleford /Yackandandah Rd C527.

A central stop between Sydney,  from Melbourne,  the 300 Km, 3 hours trip takes you along the Hume Freeway, to the Great Alpine Road which you follow until the Beechworth turn off. Continue straight through Beechworth and 23km down the road you will find the turn right to Yackandandah. Your adventure begins with the descent from the surounding tree covered hills of the Stanley State Forest, past the avenue of English trees, across the historic stong bridge with its sparkling creek.... here you'll find the township of Yackandandah.

A town built on real gold, this idyllic setting was soon to be disturbed with discovery of gold at Whisky Flat, Kirbys Flat, Staghorn Flat, Osbornes Flat, Allans Flat and Doctors Flat. Within an instant the towns population swelled to 3000 as gold fever took its hold Thousands of hopeful diggers set up their tents in rows along the flats and the banks of Yackandandah and Commissioners Creeks, and some very lucrative finds were made.

The town of Yackandandah continued to prosper and grow long after the early gold rush days,. It even had its own railway station and railway line, which was opened on 23rd July 1891 and was in use until it closed in 1955.

The name Yackandandah is said have come from two Aboriginal words meaning 'rock' and 'water hole' long ago, "Water running over rocks at the juntion of two creeks", the two creeks being Yackandandah Creek and Commissioners Creek,"rocks' one rock setting on top of another......

........and so, the mysteries of Yackandandah are revealed through images and the passion of the early settlers and gold miners who came in search of prosperity, are the legends uncovered the ghosts of the past.
